If you search online, you’ll find plenty of generic charts telling you to buy a 1/2 HP for this door or a 3/4 HP for that door. But for homeowners here on the Central Coast—from the damp marine layers of Santa Cruz to the heavy custom wood doors of Carmel-by-the-Sea—that standard advice is actually missing a few massive puzzle pieces.

The Big California Secret: Traditional Horsepower is Obsolete Here

Here is a piece of information you won't find in standard buying guides: If you live in California, you aren't really shopping for traditional Horsepower anymore.

Why? It all comes down to California Senate Bill 969.

This state law requires all new garage door openers installed in California to have a battery backup system which is crucial for power outages, especially during winter storms in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Because battery backup systems require Direct Current (DC) motors, traditional Alternating Current (AC) motors—which are measured in true, fractional Horsepower (HP)—are largely a thing of the past for new installations here on the Central Coast.

Instead, modern DC motors are measured in HPC (Horsepower Comparable), HPS (Horsepower Similar), or Newtons (N).

When we talk about horsepower today, we are really talking about the DC equivalent of lifting power. As a bonus, DC motors are noticeably quieter and provide a soft start and stop, which drastically reduces wear and tear on your door’s hardware.

The Myth of the Heavy Lifter

Here is another closely guarded industry secret: Your garage door opener does not actually lift the door.

Your garage door springs do the heavy lifting. A properly balanced garage door, even a 400-pound solid wood carriage door in Pebble Beach, should only take about 10 to 15 pounds of human force to lift by hand.

So, if the springs do the lifting, why do you need to worry about motor power at all?

You need the right amount of torque for three reasons:

  1. To overcome inertia: Getting a heavy door moving from a dead stop requires an initial burst of energy.

  2. For motor longevity: A stronger motor doesn't have to work at its maximum capacity every single day. Less strain means the internal gears will last years longer.

  3. To fight the coastal elements: This is where living on the Central Coast really matters.

Why the Central Coast Climate Demands More Power

Living anywhere from Monterey to Santa Cruz presents unique challenges for your garage door system that dictate how much power you need:

  • Coastal Wind Drag: When the wind blows off Monterey Bay and pushes against your garage door panels, it creates immense friction against the weatherstripping and tracks while the door is in motion. A weaker 1/2 HPC motor might detect this wind resistance as a safety hazard and falsely reverse the door. A stronger 3/4 HPC or 1 HPC motor powers through wind drag smoothly.

Having a motor with a little extra headroom ensures your door keeps opening reliably, even when the hardware isn't gliding as perfectly as the day it was installed.

The Aaron Overhead Door Sizing Guide (DC/HPC Equivalents)

To make things easy to understand, here is how you should size your next opener for your Central Coast home:

1/2 HP Equivalent (Often around 500 Newtons)

  • Best for: Standard, non-insulated single-car steel doors (8x7 or 9x7).

  • The Verdict: While this used to be the industry standard, we rarely recommend stopping at 1/2 HP anymore unless you have a very basic, lightweight door.

3/4 HP Equivalent (Often around 700 to 800 Newtons)

  • Best for: Double-car steel doors (16x7), insulated steel doors, and homes where the garage is used as the primary front door.

  • The Verdict: This is the new "gold standard" for our area. It has the extra torque needed to handle coastal wind drag and ensures the motor won't burn out prematurely from heavy daily use.

1 HP to 1-1/4 HP Equivalent (Often around 1000 to 1200 Newtons)

  • Best for: Heavy solid wood doors, full-view glass doors, or oversized 8-foot tall doors.

  • The Verdict: If you have custom architecture, don't skimp on the motor. You need maximum torque to ensure smooth, quiet operation without stripping the motor's internal gears over time.
